In the purgatory of utopias
A brief theological reading of the punk movement

The article proposes to make a brief analysis of the theological questions present in the punk movement, both in its historical formation and in its artistic expressions. To do so, we use Paul Tillich’s Theology of Culture as a basis for an ontological understanding of religious experience. With that, we made an approximation between belonging to a cultural movement like the one we discussed and belonging to a religious community. Likewise, the symbolic language adopted by the punks and the content of some songs that express the spirit of the movement are analyzed.
