Abstract

The aim of this article is to identify the challenges faced by teachers working in multigrade classes in a school in the rural area of Porto Velho-RO. School education and the teaching and learning process in this region are organized in multigrade classes due to the great distances between communities and the low number of students in each grade. The research setting is a rural multi-grade school, located in the municipality of Porto Velho, state of Rondônia, in the northern region of Brazil, specifically on the BR 364 highway, towards Rio Branco-AC. For data collection, five teachers who work in multigrade classes in a rural school in the city of Porto Velho-RO were interviewed, characterizing the research as qualitative, with content analysis as the basis for the process of analysis and substantiation of the interviews. The challenges faced by teachers in multigrade classes include a lack of teaching materials and an educational policy that supports them in terms of ongoing training and the access and permanence of students at school.
