Abstract

This study is part of my doctoral research conducted at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) in 2023, focused on analyzing urban social movements that emerged during the 1970s and 1980s in Nova Iguaçu, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These urban social movements arose in response to social injustices and were closely connected to the Catholic Church aligned with Liberation Theology. The study investigated the preservation of the memory of these struggles, aiming to understand the perceptions of activists regarding their participation and resistance to the civil-military dictatorship. Using oral history methodology and a discourse analysis approach, the research sought to examine both the testimonies of interviewees and written documents. Recovering these social struggles not only honors the past but can also inspire future social actions in favor of the basic rights and dignity of the population.
