This study examines the representations of childhood in the comic book
series Akissi, created by Ivorian author Marguerite Abouet and French illustrator
Mathieu Sapin. The series humorously chronicles the mischiefs and adventures
of a young girl named Akissi, who lives in an urban setting in Abidjan, the largest
city and economic hub of Côte d’Ivoire. The analysis interrogates the depiction
of children outside Western paradigms, discussing how African childhood experiences are shaped by specific cultural and social contexts. The article also
emphasizes social interactions, play, and local community dynamics, reflecting
on the diverse ways childhood is experienced within an African context, in contrast to the narratives frequently encountered in Western cultural production.
