Challenges and Relevance of Vehicle Driving for the older people

Aims: To analyze the difficulties faced by elderly people regarding vehicle driving, as well as to assess the importance they attribute to this activity. Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study evaluated 61 elderly drivers using two questionnaires developed by the researchers. The first questionnaire focused on sociodemographic data, while the second addressed issues related to the difficulties and importance of driving for elderly people. Results: The majority of participants reported only minor accidents and did not have significant issues with weather conditions, driving schedules, or road conditions. Participants used the car for daily activities and leisure, driving an average of about two hours per day. The practice of driving is seen as crucial for maintaining autonomy and family connection, and the idea of stopping driving is considered a major challenge. Conclusion: The ability to drive is vital for the emotional well-being and quality of life of elderly people, but the study also highlights the risks associated with driving at this age, such as involvement in minor accidents while driving. Therefore, it is essential to find a balance between maintaining the independence of elderly people and ensuring road safety.
