Abstract

The influence of gender on the presence of behavior problems during childhood has been a topic of interest of the recent literature. Studies indicate that boys show more externalizing behavior problems, while girls show more internalizing behavior problems. Besides, boys also show more problems than girls, in general. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of gender on the “Child Behavior Checklist” (CBCL) scales in a group of Brazilian children, and compare the results with multicultural data obtained with the same form. Parents of 1228 children, aged six to 11 years old, completed the CBCL in schools of different Brazilian regions. Boys achieved significantly higher scores on the externalizing scale and total problems scale. These results allow us to conclude that the effects of gender on the CBCL scales are very similar in Brazil and other countries.
