The aim of this study was to examine the period of adaptation to day care for infants aged 4-5 months during the first 10 weeks. In particular, we sought to investigate the coping strategies used by the infants during this period. Participants were 3 babies who entered the nursery at 4-5 months, their mothers and educators. This is a multiple case study, in which interviews with the mothers, observations in the day-care center and the application of a protocol filled out by the educators were carried out. The qualitative analysis of the data indicated that the infants used different coping strategies during daycare adaptation, which suggests that they experienced this period in a stressful way. And the time they expend in day care during the period investigated did not necessarily reduce the use of these strategies. The results suggests that the adaptation to day care in infants of 4-5 months is not a linear process, since there have been advances and setbacks in the period investigated.
