Despite the repeated relationships between self-compassion and mental health and the relevance of the early maladaptive schemas (EMS) to understand personality, the number of studies relating these constructs is still internationally scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the components of self-compassion and EMS. The sample consisted of 209 university students (medium age of 25.55; SD = 6.96). Measures used were Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3). The results showed negative and significant correlations between the EMS and the components of self-compassion, suggesting that the greater the intensity of the schema, the lower the levels of self-compassion. Understanding how individual characteristics relate to the components of self-compassion can guide the development of more refined interventions to promote the benefits of self-compassion.
