This article aims to analyze the use of the therapeutic consultation, according to Winnicott (1971[1984]), as a kind of action that offers a space for holding to the couple with an autistic child. Therapeutic consultations were offered to the couples whose children participated in activities at an institution specialized in assisting children with this diagnosis, located in a city of São Paulo state. Ten couples were received; data from the first meeting with each couple were transcribed and analyzed. It was discussed the interface between the marital and parental relationship and evaluated the use of the consultation in the understanding of family functioning and, at the same time, as a space for communication of conflicts experienced by the family. It was concluded on the need for a more constant therapeutic space for the couple in order to discuss and take care of the marital relationship.Downloads
