Abstract

This study analyzes the concepts of Community Health Agents (CHAs) concerning the difficulties of their work, through eleven open interviews performed with CHAs working at Family Health Units in the city of Ribeirão Preto. Through thematic content analysis, the following four themes arouse: ‘relationship with users”, ‘relationship with the team’, ‘lack of rewards’, and ‘living in the surrounding area’. The themes were described and analyzed based on collective health framework. It is emphasized that significant changes in the health practice have been achieved from the insertion of CHAs in the Family Health Program, but it is necessary to rethink characteristics of their work, with the aim to strengthen creativity and value the CHAs’ work in the health team.
