Environmental volunteerism: an exploratory study

Abstract

Environmental volunteerism is an example of prosocial behavior and pro-environmental behavior confluence. The objective was to characterize the volunteer in the organization: thematic categories of speech, and functions of volunteering. The Volunteer Function Inventory (VFI) was applied to four volunteers and semi-structured interviews were conducted with three of them. Four thematic axis were identified: characteristics and profile of volunteering, volunteer organization, environmental crisis and society perception. The VFI has identified similarities and differences regarding gender and age. The importance of monetary rewarding for the insertion and maintenance of volunteerism is discussed. Suggestions are provided for managers and for future research.

André Luís Ferreira Moniz, Universidade de Brasília

Graduei-me como Bacharel e Psicólogo em pela Universidade de Brasília (1999 e 2000) e concluí o mestrado em Psicologia pela mesma universidade, em 2002, quando pesquisei sobre os trabalhos voluntários e a percepção dos profissionais em saúde, sob orientação da Professora Tereza Cristina Cavalcanti Ferreira de Araújo em Psicologia da Saúde. Atuo como professor universitário desde 2002 e atualmente leciono em duas faculdades: A Universidade Paulista e o Instituto de Educação Superior de Goiás. Tenho experiência profissional em Gestão de IES e em programas do MEC como, por exemplo: SINAES, autorização e reconhecimento de cursos superiores, FIES e Prouni. Interesso-me por comportamentos pró-sociais e pró-ambientais, com enfoque no voluntariado. Mais recentemente tenho estudado perspectivas de mudança de comportamento em uma direção responsável ambientalmente e estratégias de implementação.
