Abstract

Low performance at school is one of the main reasons for referral of children to public health services and clinical school of psychology. Studies suggest that the prevalence of mental health problems is higher among children with underachievement than in general population. This study aimed to identify psychiatric disorders associated with underachievement according to the categories of DSM-IV-TRTM and describe the clientele. One hundred and three children participated, aged 6 to 12 years, referred to a university clinic of psychology, with complaints of underachievement. The records were consulted and the adapted Brazilian parent-version of the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA), interview for the diagnosis of mental disorders in childhood and adolescence according to DSM-IV-TRTM, was applied. A high prevalence of mental health problems, previous health treatments, and use of psychotropic medication was found. The work offers clues to the need of public policies in the area of child mental health.
