Aims: To analyze the teaching method and the results of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Source of data: A Medline search was conducted to retrieve studies about the teaching and evaluation of prevention of neonatal mortality and about the acquisition and retention of knowledge provided by Neonatal Resuscitation Programs from 1990 to 2006. The terms neonatal resuscitation, newborn, and education were used. Summary of findings: The Neonatal Resuscitation Program provided knowledge and technical skills on assistance to newborns. They also improved the selfconfidence of attending physicians in the delivery room. As a consequence, the efficacy of care improves, with fewer patients presenting neonatal asphyxia and more patients presenting with better 5-minute Apgar scores. However, the retention of knowledge decreases with time, and further training opportunities should be provided. Conclusions: The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is a course that positively affects professional competence and neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, changes in the course should be considered to improve the retention of theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skills. KEY WORDS: CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION/ education; CLINICAL COMPETENCE; INFANT NEWBORN; NEONATAL MORTALITY; META-ANALYSIS.Downloads
