Biographical narratives as an aid to the method of discernment in moral theology

This article aims to present the integration of two methods in moral theology research. The method of discernment, developed by Tony Mifsud, is a very useful instrument for carrying out ethical discernment in a pastoral key, as Pope Francis aspires to in Amoris Laetitia (Francisco, 2016). In order for this method to develop its full potential, one of its stages, in the analysis of reality, is proposed to integrate it with the method of biographical narratives, by Gabriele Rosenthal (2014). This method, following the theoretical framework of Alfred Schütz (2018), is capable of bringing some benefits to moral science, such as: paying attention to the individuality of the person in its complexity, enabling, in discernment, the integration between autonomy and heteronomy; finding paths for an adequate experience of values; and guiding the paths of an adequate moral education.
