Abstract

The general aim of this paper is to offer some elements for a deeper reflection on the notion of piety linked to the notion of woman in Hegel’s Philosophy of Right. The more specific problem that guides the article is the fact that the discussion of piety in this context involves two German terms, namely Pietät and Frömmigkeit. In this work, Hegel doesn’t define them very precisely, but he does indicate a necessary differentiation. So, firstly, the text searches for the semantic roots of these terms; then, it recovers an ancient notion of piety, pointing to meanings of this term that have been lost throughout history. The hypothesis is that by linking piety to women, especially by bringing in the figure of Antigone, Hegel opens up space for thinking about this concept not only in a religious sense, but also in an ethical and political sense, even though he criticises a political use of piety, for example in §270 of the same work, that is, as the foundation of the state.
