Abstract

The present article seeks to make a brief presentation of the thought of Adorno and Horkheimer, Häbermas, Gramsci, Werneck Sodré and Genro Filho about the Media Industry, Journalism and their respective places in society. We execute a bibliographic review, pointing out the ruptures and continuities of the thought of authors generally informed by the same font of knowledge: Marxism. We distinguish between the “pessimists” and the “optimists”, profoundly aligned to their respective understandings of the relation between the base and the superstructure to sketch a synthesis of the limits and possibilities of the Media Industry in modernity. We propose a halfway alignment between the two groups of thought, toward popular direct action in the democratization of the Public Sphere.
