Abstract

Today, it is essential to know how to read and how to produce meaning about the moving images and syncretic texts, those constituted by different languages, present every day. Because of that, our goal in this article is to reflect about the femininity and masculinity representations in a Brazilian animated cartoon. For that, we analyzed an episode of a Brazilian animated series called Irmão do Jorel (2014), the episode was “Fury and power over wheels”. Discursive semiotics was the theoretical-methodological perspective used for that analysis. The analysis presented in this article comes from a dissertation, but the discussion was increased to reflect specifically about the representations of femininity and masculinity.

Júlia Soares Martini, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Teacher of the Early Years in the Municipal School System of Porto Alegre. Master in Education from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (CNPq scholarship holder), supervised by Professor Dr. Analice Dutra Pillar. Bachelor in Pedagogy (UFRGS). Researcher linked to the groups Gearte/PPGEDU/CNPq (Research Group on Education and Art) and GPED/UFRGS (Research Group on Education and Disciplining). She is also part of the research project “Literary collections of public programs for the promotion of reading (PNBE, PNLD): Literary education and reading comprehension in the early years of elementary school”, whose principal researcher is Professor Dr. Marília Forgearini Nunes.

Analice Dutra Pillar, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

She is a full professor at the School of Education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a CNPq research productivity grantee. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1983), a master's degree in Arts from the University of São Paulo (1990), and a PhD in Arts from the University of São Paulo (1994). She completed a postdoctoral internship in Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. She coordinates the Research Group on Education and Art (Gearte/UFRGS/CNPq). She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Gearte Journal of UFRGS. She works as a professor in the undergraduate and graduate programs in Education at the School of Education of UFRGS, supervising master's and doctoral students in the area of ​​Education and Visual Arts. He has experience in the areas of Education and Arts, with an emphasis on teaching Visual Arts, working mainly on the following topics: teacher training, visual arts, image reading, audiovisual productions, television media and childhood.
