Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the character Major Tom created by British singer and songwriter David Bowie as a contemporary variation of what Ian Watt described as Myths of Modern Individualism. From authors such as Gilbert Durand, Mircea Eliade, Jean Pierre Vernant and Ian Watt, the terms “myth”, “literary myths” and “myths of modern individualism” are presented in order to provide the appropriate conceptual tools for the analysis of specificities of the myth involving the character created by Bowie. Below is an analysis of the lyrics and video clips of the songs “Space Oddity” and “Ashes to Ashes” in order to highlight symbolic and narrative aspects in the construction of the character’s story. Finally, the results of the analysis carried out are contextualized in the post-Cold War environment, in which authors such as Mark Fisher and Anselm Jappe are mobilized in order to give the typical contours of the myth of Major Tom as a myth of contemporary individualism.
