Coparenting is the family subsystem responsible for the proper development of children. The relevance of this subsystem has led researchers to investigate it from different perspectives. This study aimed to understand the perception of adolescents with internalizing and/or externalizing symptoms, members of nuclear and separated families, about the characteristics of parental coparenting. Nineteen adolescents, boys and girls, from three public schools in the state of Rio Grande do Sul participated in the survey. The adolescents responded a socio-demographic questionnaire and participated in a focus group. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were carried out through which three categories were organized: cooperation, conflict and triangulation. The results indicated that adolescents perceive family dynamics and are directly impacted by the characteristics, positive and negative, of the interaction between parents, both in nuclear families and in separated ones. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies to work with the different family configurations focusing on coparenting, an accessible subsystem to carry out interventions and protective to the development of children.
