Abstract

The article examines the adoption of television practices by video streaming services, challenging initial discourses of a rupture with television. It analyzes recent transformations in the television market, such as the reintroduction of elements like advertisements, subscription bundles, and live broadcasts within subscription video on-demand services (SVODs), which reflect the search for financial sustainability and audience retention. The current fluidity of the concept of television renders the notion of a linear evolution of television models inadequate, instead highlighting a coexistence and hybridization of models and practices. Streaming services, by adopting television practices, challenge predictions about the end of TV, underscoring the need for a more nuanced understanding of the television medium in the digital age.
